FAQ: If I am right-handed, should I choose the RIGHT-Shoulder or LEFT-Shoulder version?

Answer: It depends. Choosing a shoulder to carry a "shoulder-specific" slingpack is usually a personal preference. Whether you are right- or left-handed, you can wear a slingpack on either shoulder as long as it feels "comfortable" to you. Statistically, 60-65% of our right-handed clients opt for a left-shoulder-carry slingpack, and vice versa. There are a few things that you might want to consider when making such decision: (1) Is there another item that you must carry on a specific shoulder? Example, a shoulder carried rifle. If so, you go with the opposite shoulder to carry your slingpack. (2) Do you have a bad shoulder? If so, please wear your slingpack on the opposite side. (3) Do you carry bulky item on one side hip that will interfere with shifting a slingpack to your front? The reason being, a LEFT-shoulder-carry slingpack will swing from your BACK, travel across your RIGHT hip, then to your FRONT. Therefore, if you must carry something bulky on your right-hip, please go with a right-shoulder-carry slingpack (and vice versa). (4) Do you carry something in the bag that must be operated with a specific hand? For example, most cameras are designed for right-hand use, so a photographer might prefer the RIGHT-Shoulder version because it gives him/her better access to cameras using right hand, while allowing left hand to change lens or return the slingpack to the back.

I'll keep this short and real. I have dozens of packs from EBay and Amazon to Maxpedition Condor SOG and First Tactical to compare my new Javelin to. The first thing I noticed was the near perfect stitching,OCD, and the feel of the bag. The sound of the YKK sippers rolling threw there tracks, zip zip zip, sounds of quality! I am not crazy about the color blind me orange but that's where pictures fail. The orange liners are very vivid but not loud saying, I'm over here!. which was a huge plus for me. There are a ton of pockets, I LIKE POCKETS! to organize just about everything you could think of and miss place items over time. In short if you are looking at this bag, 3+ weeks for me, just get it. Its top shelf cream of the crop, go ahead and drag me behind your 4x4 on accident tough. Oh and it looks great and feels nice! Why the hell I waited so long to get one is beyond me. A BIG shout out to all who made this bag for me and a huge hug to all the awesome people at VANQUEST for a great piece of gear! Yes, I recommend this bag so get one!

My observations and feedback one month after purchase

    Posted by D.T on 5th Aug 2018

This is my third Vanquest bag. I also own the Trident 20 gen 2 and the Trident 31. I purchased the Javelin 3.0 as a replacement for another bag that just wasn't quite big enough to fit my work laptop. I've been carrying the Javelin to work every day for month now so I have a pretty good feel for how the bag performs. It has just enough space to hold the work laptop, a letter-sized notebook, my lunch, plus an assortment of personal items. The padding on the shoulder strap is second to none. I've owned bags from several different manufacturers and I've yet to see anyone who does better with shoulder strap padding that I've seen so far and the storage organization is excellent.

Accessing the bag from the side takes a little getting used to - it's a paradigm shift from a traditional backpack with typically only supports access from the top of the bag by design; however, it's really nice to have full access to the bag's contents without having to take it off of my shoulder or worry about things spilling out because the zippers support access from either the side or the top. The shock cord on the outside of the upper pocket is perfect for carrying a pair of sunglasses in a case or other small item.

The only thing I'd change/improve on this bag is that sometimes when I pick up the bag by the shoulder strap, the buckle will let out all of the slack and I will lose my strap adjustment. The only way I can prevent this from happening is if I move the elastic keeper on the shoulder strap all the way up towards the buckle, which unfortunately leaves the excess shoulder strap flapping in the breeze. This could be easly fixed if Vanquest provided two elastic keepers on the shoulder strap - one to retain the adjustment near the buckle and the other to manage the the slack in the strap itself. With that issue corrected this bag would be beyond reproach.

Like my review for the Trident 20, I would give this bag 4 1/2 stars if I could:

1 star for thoughtful design of the storage
1 star for craftsmanship and durability of materials
1 star for comfort of carry
    1 star for external modularity/options
1 star for convenient accessibility of the contents

I'd subtract half a star for the slack issue with the shoulder strap, but it's otherwise a minor issue with what is otherwise an excellent bag.

Great EDC bag and much more

Posted by Ken Curtis on 15th Apr 2018

I purchased this bag for multiple reasons, it's perfect as a personal bag to go along with my carry on for flights. Great for cruises and trips to Disney. The fact that you can bring the bag in front of you for easy accessibility, security when in populated areas and to just sit down without removing it is wonderful. The bag is comfortable and has many organizing pockets to arrange your gear. The high viz orange interior makes it easy to see things inside the bag. The shoulder strap is very comfortable and stays in place very well. The waist strap helps when you have heavier loads and don't want the bag to move around as much. Once you own a piece of vanquest gear, you'll end up replacing all your gear with Vanquest. Not only is this a great "getaway" bag, but it would make a great EDC bag for your gear. The possibilities of this bag are endless! Great piece of gear!!!

Webbing on shoulder strap doesn't hold in place

Posted by Greg M on 6th Apr 2018

I use this bag every day to carry a 15" MacBook Pro and everyday use items for work. It's not a lot of weight or volume. The material that this is made from is solid. It seems a lot of planning went into the pockets. They are useful and seem to have have a purpose no matter what you use this bag for. The interior color makes items stand out. This should be standard on all bags.
What I don't like about this bag is the interior compartment is a little small. I have to store a 15" laptop in the main compartment making the dividers useless. The waist strap must be disconnected to be stowed. It would make sense to have access to the hydration compartment so this can be tucked in when not in use rather than having to detach. I find myself using the side handle more often than the top handle for grabbing the bag out of car and taking it on and off shoulder, but it is not centered and makes the bag off balance and awkward to use. The biggest issue I have is that the webbing on the should strap slides lose. No matter what I've tried the buckle will not hold it in position making the bag sag to my lower back and buttocks. If you plan on using this for more rugged purposes this is a show stopper. For a quality bag with a premium price tag, it should have a shoulder strap that will stay in place. This is the main reason for a 2 star rating. I hope this feedback is taken into consideration and the shoulder strap is fixed in a later version.

How did I manage without it ?

Posted by Oscar Hernandez Trainer at Schluter Systems on 12th Feb 2018

I travel over a 100,000 miles a year by plane, this slinger has been by far my favorite companion bag.
I mean everything is right there without having to take the bag off, all you have to do is swing it around and voila! I carry every EDC item I'm allowed to have on planes with enough room to pack my KHUL goose down jacket when the projector is not in it.

Highly recommended,Vanquest makes high end products that perform well and I anticipate, will last a long time!

    Thanks Vanquest!!

    1 yr Review

Posted by Todd Goetz on 6th Feb 2018

I have used this bag as my EDC bag for over a year. It holds my Surface Pro and 3-ring binder/folders without problem. It still looks like the day I got it, and I carry it ALOT. The zippers are and workmanship are flawless. I used this as my carry bag on a vacation to Spain last year and the side entry rocks. You can also swing it around to the front while standing in line to protect from theft.

The only issue I have had is the buckle on the sling strap does not hold the set position and must be reset about every second or third day of carry.

    Absolutely phenomenal!

Posted by Jack Rowe on 3rd Feb 2018

I'm using this as my EDC bag, and it goes everywhere with me. I've had several lower quality bags before this, (one of which literally fell apart at the seams) and the change was like comparing a lame donkey to a Maserati.

Every single part of this bag is so well thought out and so well executed that I cannot overstate just how satisfied I am with it.

The attention to detail is outstanding all over the bag, from the way all the snap fasteners are mounted on webbing in such a way that you can get your fingers to both sides to shut them easier, to how all the smaller compartments have just a little extra material for room at the bottom so it's not too tight to seat gear all the way down.

To me the Javelin is in essence designed for certain criteria; toughness, everyday portability, and organisation. In my opinion it knocks everything it tries to do out of the park.

The ordering was easy, and it arrived very promptly despite its trip over the Atlantic.

Vanquest has earned my undying brand loyalty and admiration. Well done and keep up the good work!

I have been searching for a sling bag I can take on photo trips to carry some gear and my surface pro. I came across Vanquest just searching for options. I had bought 3 bags prior to this one. My search is over! Hands down this bag is excellent. Well built fits my giant frame well and carry's all my stuff!!! I love it.. I'm happy I found this company and I would highly recommend this bag. Thanks you!

    Perfect Camera Bag!

Posted by Unknown on 24th Aug 2017

I researched for about 3 months what bag to get specifically for photography. I had tried various low pro bags, peak design, and camera inserts to accommodate my needs. Nothing was meeting my expectations. Finally I found Vanquest (how are they so unknown?!) and after watching a few YouTube videos I bought the Javelin. It's great, that's all I can really say. I can keep my camera(a6300) with a kit lens on it, my 55-210 in a case, my iPad 2, and a first aid kit. Not to mention I also have spare batteries, chargers, cables, external batteries, and other various bits of EDC I keep with me daily. I love not having to put the bag down if I want to change lenses or grab a cleaning cloth. The quality of the bag far exceeded what I was hoping to get. The materials, design, and shipping was all first rate. Planing on getting the TRIDENT-31 once my Mavic Pro comes in the mail.
